UKATA Asbestos Awareness

Course Content

This is a full day course for employees who are required by the Control of Asbestos Regulations 2006 to undertake asbestos awareness training, and complies in full with Regulation 10. It combines the minimum half-day requirement of a UKATA asbestos awareness course (Sessions 1 to 3) with an afternoon session delivering additional information which is of importance to supervisors and managers, estimators, technicians and other staff who require a more in depth understanding of the Regulations and their implementation.

This course is not suitable for those who will knowingly disturb licensable and non-licensable asbestos material.

The course is extensively illustrated with photographs of real situations and asbestos materials, and includes the following key elements:

Session 1 – Introducing asbestos
 The science, the history and the health issues
The chemistry and properties of asbestos, and health risks for different categories of workers and smokers
Respirable fibres and why they cause harm
 Product types and associated risks
 Popular myths
HSE video

Session 2 – Asbestos materials
 Forms, materials, products and how to recognise them
 Photo gallery and discussion of candidates experience (this session comprises 50+ slides with photos of real products of varying types, intending to give candidates exposure to materials they may never have seen, but may one day…)
 Where asbestos materials may be hidden
 HSE MDHS100 overview: the principle of presumption and concept of “strong evidence”

Session 3 – Regulations and responsibilities
 Legislation, other drivers, surveys and risk assessment
 Overview of H&S regulatory framework and CAR 2006
 Approved codes of practice (L127, L143) and their legal status
 Surveys: types, structure and sampling
 Risk assessments

Session 4 – Management planning (Full day)
 Plans, controls and information sources
Management plans; content and review
 Penalties for non-compliance
 Work on asbestos – what you can do and what you can’t as a non-licensed operative
 Overview of removal process for licensed products (enclosure, DCU, disposal, cost etc)

By the end of this full day course, you will be able to:

 understand the properties of asbestos and how it affects the health of those exposed, especially if they also smoke
 recognise different types and uses of asbestos and know where these materials are likely to be situated in buildings
 follow a procedure to deal with an emergency release of asbestos fibres
 avoid risk to yourself from asbestos encountered in your everyday work
 understand the basics of management planning and the responsibilities of a duty-holder

This course will be delivered by John Moseley, a chartered engineer and practising asbestos surveyor who has also spent a considerable number of years in the electrical contracting industry. John is a UKATA registered trainer.

Please note that a short multiple-choice test is a compulsory part of UKATA registered training. This will be conducted following Session 3 and lasts for 10 – 15 minutes
