The Electrical Installation Training Scheme

The advanced apprenticeship lasts for four years (although previous experience and qualifications gained by the young person may reduce this). Training will be provided to enable completion of the NVQ Level 3 in Electrotechnical Installation. Training will also include the City and Guilds 2357 Electrotechnical and the Key Skills in Application of Number, Communication and Information and Communication Technology, and, finally, the industry’s own practical performance assessment, the AM2 test, which is normally taken towards the end of the fourth year. An example of the timescale for delivery of training is shown below.

Year 1 – Stage 1
On the job training provided by the employer. Four 2 week blocks over the first year spent at BET training centre, working towards completion of City & Guilds 2357 knowledge units and Key Skills units.

The apprentice is required to keep a record of the ‘on the job’ training in the Stage 1 logbook.

Year 2 – Stage 2
On the job training continues with the employer. Further four 2 week blocks spent at BET training centre, working towards completion of City & Guilds 2357 knowledge unuts.

The apprentice continues to record the ‘on the job’ training in the Stage 2 logbook.

Year 3 – Stage 3
‘On the job’ training with employer leading to completion of Stage 3 logbook.

Year 4 – Stage 4
Continuing to gain ‘on the job’ experience with the employer. The apprentice will undertake the Practical Skills test, AM2.

Completion of City & Guilds levels 2 & 3, Keyskills, logbooks and AM2 skills test leads to NVQ Level 3 certification being applied for.

Once this certificate has been awarded an application for grading as an electrician can be applied for.
