Who is the course for?

The IOSH Managing Safely course is targeted at managers who are involved in managing risk and resources. It aims to ensure that safety issues are fully understood by those who are employed as line managers and to enable these people to review their departmental systems for safety. The course also helps managers to introduce new controls and implement changes in order to reduce risks in the workplace.

Course content:

  • Assessing risk – risk assessments and a simple scoring system are introduced and delegates are given the chance to execute both.
  • Controlling risks – examines how risks can be fully controlled or reduced through specific techniques and methods.
  • Understanding responsibilities – background to the law regarding health and safety management systems.
  • Identifying & understanding hazards – everything from entrances and exits, to work traffic, to fire, to chemical, electricity, etc are covered.
  • Investigating accidents & incidents – the importance of determining the causes of workplace accidents, and how to properly go about investigating.
  • Measuring performance – monitoring performance to ensure the improvement of health and safety in a work environment through basic performance indicators.
  • Protecting our environment – a comprehensive introduction to the value of environmental responsibility of operations and minimising environmental impact.


  • A 25 question, multiple format assessment paper.
  • A risk assessment based project.

The above course includes refreshments and buffet lunch.
