About the course

The 2396-01 is an advanced Level 4 course designed for those involved in designing electrical installations and follows on from the C&G 2395 qualification.

Entry requirements

There is no formal entry requirement for this qualification however candidates must hold the 18th Edition Regulations (C&G 2382-18) and one of the following inspection & testing qualifications:

  • City & Guilds 2391-10 Inspection & Testing
  • City & Guilds 2391-52 Inspection & Testing

Assessment

The 2396-01 covers the principles, practices and legislation for the specification and design of electrical installations which includes two assessment units:

  • 401 Design project
  • 402 3 hour written test

The design project requires the candidate to complete a design exercise in their own time on a pre-defined installation.  Drawing plans will be provided and tutor support will be available throughout the project.

Course content

  • Design, construction, commissioning processes for electrical installation
  • Electrical installation design statutory, non-statutory requirements – BS 7671 regulatory requirements pertaining to electrical installation design
  • Essential principles for designing and installing protective systems.
  • Design and verification processes for single and poly phase electrical installations – choosing alternative energy sources related to eco-friendly technologies for electrical installations.
  • The City & Guilds 2396 Electrical Design Course contains one written exam on a set date issued by the City & Guild delegates will also have to complete an assignment that usually amounts to approximately 40 hours of work.
