Meet the Team

John Sims

Managing Director

John Sims has worked in the electrical industry since leaving school at the age of 15 in 1968 when he started his apprenticeship with F Osborn (Electrical).  After completing his apprenticeship John worked as an electrician for 2 years before being promoted to Supervisor in 1972 and was promoted to a Director at the age of 32 in 1985.  This followed by John being offered shares in F Osborn and eventually owning F Osborn and becoming the Managing Director in 1992.

During the course of John’s career at Osborn Electrical he was involved in apprenticeship training and was closely involved with the founder members of BECTG (Birmingham Electrical Contracting Training Group).  In 1997 John was made Chairman of BECTG.  BECTG was a network of electrical contractors which was formed to share good practice and train their own electricians to industry standards.  The company grew rapidly from 1997 and in 2001 it became necessary to put it on a stronger footing.  To this end, John and two fellow directors bought the company from the Group in September 2001 and the name was changed to Birmingham Electrical Training.

In September 2002 John’s vision of Birmingham Electrical Training having its own dedicated Training Centre became a reality and Birmingham Electrical Training moved into a specialist training Centre at 34 Brearley Street in Hockley.

In August 2011 John gave up his role in the electrical contracting industry and dedicated his time to enhancing the service Birmingham Electrical Training could offer the electrical industry for apprenticeship training and upskilling courses for qualified electricians.

BET continues to work closely with local contractors, some of whom have trained with BET for over 20 Years.

John takes a personal interest in every student and is heavily involved in the day to day running of the apprenticeship training.  John is often seen chatting to apprentices in the canteen and classroom.  He also gets involved in the assessment presentation where he refers to his personal experiences in the electrical industry.

Over the last 5 years John has built a team of tutors and training officers who hold a wealth of electrical knowledge.  All tutors have worked within the electrical industry and have a passion to train the next generation of electricians.  Tutors and training officers fully support apprentices throughout their apprenticeship and go above and beyond their role to ensure apprentices reach their targets.

It is John’s vision that he will continue steering BET to guarantee the next generation of electricians for many years to come and continue to keep electricians up to date with new electrical qualifications.
